Post-Op Instructions
- No sexual activity, and no ejaculation, for one month after surgery.
This can result in sperm leakage and scarring down the anastamosis.
Occasionally, a patient will have a nocturnal emission. This will not
pose a problem provided there is no other sexual activity during the
month.
- We suggest a semen analysis after 3 months, and again after 6
months, in order to be the most helpful in advising patients post-op.
- Post-op pain in the lower abdomen and groin usually mean too much
post-op activity and inadequate support. If this occurs stay off feet,
curtail activity, and make sure support is snug.
- Incisions are usually healed by 2 weeks. Occasionally they may drain
longer and usually are healed by 3 weeks at the most.
- For the first month after surgery, no lifting more than 30 pounds,
no walking more than 150 feet at a time, and no standing more than 20
minutes at a time. Wear support at all times during the first month. No
squatting, abdominal exercises, leg exercises or running for 6 weeks
after surgery.
- If you have a desk job you may return to work a week after surgery.
If you have a physical job you should speak with your employer about
short-term disability leave or light duty for the month after surgery.
If you have limited time off from a physical job use the time off to
stay off your feet so that you are not having discomfort on returning to
work. This will go far to help your recovery.
- Problems with children (birth defects etc.) in reversal couples are
no higher than in the general population.
- When sexual activity is resumed, best sperm quality is obtained
every other day during ovulation.
- Report all pregnancies to our office.
