Sperm Retrieval and Storage

Some surgeons are offering the option of sperm retrieval and storage at the time of the reversal. For several years we also offered this service. There is an initial processing fee of $1500 or more and subsequent storage fees as time goes on.
There is the possibility that after thawing out the specimen that the sperm will be dead and not usable. This is very disappointing when the overall cost of such a venture is considerable. If the sperm is viable it is used in conjunction with Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

When obtaining sperm from the vasal end at the time of reversal, usually the amount would be very small. Viable sperm are not always seen at the vasal end.

A better site to find viable usable sperm for storage would be the testicle, as obtained in a testis biopsy (removing testicular tissue at the time of reversal).

When the patency rate is 96% for reversals regardless of the age of the vasectomy, as ours is, the feasibility of storing sperm is of less importance and we no longer offer sperm retrieval with our reversals.
